Otu Presents ₦25m Each to 18 Victims of Calabar Mall Fire incident

Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, Monday, presented cheques worth ₦25 million each to 18 business owners affected by the recent SPAR fire incident, describing the intervention as a critical lifeline to help the victims rebuild their businesses and restore their livelihoods. Governor Otu made the presentation at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Calabar, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting small and medium-sized businesses across the state.

The Governor acknowledged that accidents were sometimes unavoidable, but stressed that the most important consideration was how government responded to people affected by unfortunate circumstances.

“I know that accidents happen, and there is sometimes little that anybody can do about them. But the important thing is how we respond to such unfortunate situations,” Otu said.

He explained that his administration places strong emphasis on supporting small businesses because of their contribution to the economy and the livelihoods of residents.

“This government believes principally in supporting small businesses, recognising their importance to the economy and the livelihoods of our people. That is why we are prepared to provide support in every way possible,” he stated.

Otu recalled the visit of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Cross River State on September 1, 2026, for the launch of the South-South Zone of the National Community Food Bank Programme, noting that the visit produced positive multiplier effects beyond the immediate purpose of the programme. He expressed appreciation to the First Lady for her practical disposition and empathy, describing the intervention for the fire victims as a demonstration of compassionate leadership.

The Governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the people-centred focus of the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the intervention would help alleviate the economic hardship faced by the affected families. "Besides, the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is people-centred. The programme gives hope to the hopeless, succour to the suffering, and protection to the oppressed and vulnerable in society,” Otu said.

He urged the beneficiaries to utilise the funds productively, stressing that the financial assistance should translate into sustainable livelihoods and the rebuilding of their businesses. "It is important to mention at this point that the financial lifeline provided by Mr. President should be translated into productive lives and sustainable livelihoods, in order to justify his love, sacrifice and goodwill,” he said.

Otu further assured the beneficiaries that they would continue to receive encouragement and support as they work towards stabilizing and rebuilding their businesses.

He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the intervention, noting that it would go a long way in reducing the anguish and economic burden on the affected families.

“As a responsive and responsible government, my administration will continue to support small and medium-sized enterprises to thrive, recognizing the informal sector as the engine room of our economy,” the Governor stated.

He also encouraged entrepreneurs in the state to take advantage of government-supported business advisory services, soft loans and grants available through the ministry responsible for financing and enterprise development. "The doors of the Ministry responsible for financing and enterprise development are always open to entrepreneurs seeking business advisory services, soft loans and grants. I therefore encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to grow your businesses and improve your livelihoods,” Otu added.

On his part, the Spar, Calabar branch Manager, Mr. Gbenga Ewarawon thanked the President and Governor for their unweaving commitment to the welding of the people and for giving hope to the affected businesses.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Chief Executive Officer of AM Global, Andifonkan Samuel, expressed appreciation to the Governor, the Federal Government and other stakeholders for their intervention and support.

The representative noted that the presence of government officials and other stakeholders at the presentation underscored the importance attached to restoring hope to those affected by the incident. The beneficiaries also commended President Tinubu for his intervention, describing the support as an effort aimed at restoring hope and helping affected citizens return to productive economic activity.

Independence Anniversary: Otu Calls for Peace, Unity, Collective Nation-Building

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to peace, unity and national development, stressing that the responsibility of building a prosperous Nigeria rests on every citizen. Governor Otu made the call through the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, at an interdenominational thanksgiving service held at the Christian Central Chapel, Ikot Eneobong, 8 Miles, Calabar, to commemorate Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Governor described the anniversary as more than a celebration of Nigeria's independence, saying it was an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the sacrifices of the nation's founding heroes and recommit themselves to the task of building a country worthy of future generations.

According to him, “Independence is more than the remembrance of a date in our history. It is a reminder of the sacrifices of those who came before us and of the responsibility placed on our generation to build a nation that future generations will be proud to inherit.”

Reflecting on Nigeria's journey since independence in 1960, Otu acknowledged the challenges confronting the nation but noted that the resilience, enterprise and determination of Nigerians had continued to sustain the country's hope for a better future.

“Nigeria has travelled a long road since 1960. Yet, through it all, the Nigerian spirit has endured. Our people remain resilient, enterprising and deeply committed to the hope of a better country,” he said.

The Governor said his administration remained committed to policies and programmes aimed at improving the quality of life of Cross Riverians, particularly through youth empowerment, stronger education and healthcare systems, support for enterprise, infrastructure development and increased investment. Reaffirming his administration's People First agenda, Otu said the government would continue to work deliberately towards creating a state where citizens could live peacefully, work with dignity and approach the future with confidence.

“We will continue to work deliberately towards a state where our people can live in peace, work with dignity and look to the future with confidence. But the Government cannot do this alone,” he stated. He therefore called for greater collaboration among Government, religious institutions, traditional rulers, the private sector, civil society organisations, young people and citizens, stressing that sustainable development required collective responsibility. Otu also urged Nigerians to use the occasion of the anniversary to pray for wisdom for leaders at all levels, peace in communities, protection for security personnel and comfort for families facing hardship.

“As we pray for Nigeria today, let us pray for wisdom for our leaders at every level. Let us also pray for greater unity in our country,” he said. On Nigeria's rich cultural and religious diversity, the Governor urged citizens to see their differences as a source of strength rather than division. "Our diversity should not divide us. We may come from different ethnic groups, speak different languages and practise different faiths, but we share one country and one collective destiny,” he said. He called on Nigerians to reject violence, respect the rule of law, promote peaceful coexistence and remain hopeful and committed to the task of nation-building.

In his sermon, titled “Using Your Past Testimonies to Unlock Your New Miracle,” the President of Christian Central Chapel International Faith Mansion World Centre, Archbishop Emma Gospel Isong, drew lessons from Exodus 15:22–27, recounting the experience of the Israelites at Marah after crossing the Red Sea. Archbishop Isong noted that although the Israelites encountered bitter water in the wilderness, God provided a way out through Moses, transforming their situation and turning what appeared to be a source of despair into sustenance.

He said the biblical account demonstrated the importance of remembering God's faithfulness in previous difficult circumstances as a source of strength and renewed faith when confronted with fresh challenges. The Archbishop urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, prayerful and confident in God's ability to transform difficult situations, while calling for continued prayers for the nation's leaders, peace across communities, protection for security personnel and greater opportunities for young people.

He also cautioned against divisive rhetoric and the indiscriminate criminalisation of political and public office holders, urging citizens to channel their grievances through constructive and solution-oriented criticism.

Rather than deepening divisions, Archbishop Isong encouraged Nigerians to promote unity, reject hatred and violence, and contribute positively to the development and image of Cross River State and Nigeria.

The thanksgiving service brought together government officials, religious leaders, traditional rulers, members of the legislature, political stakeholders, civil servants and other citizens who joined in prayers of thanksgiving for Nigeria's 66 years of independence and the continued peace and progress of Cross River State.

Otu’s Adviser Unveils ‘Do the Right Thing’ Campaign for Environmental Responsibility

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Affairs, Mr. Nsa Gill, has introduced a social reorientation campaign, “Do the Right Thing,” aimed at promoting ethical conduct, civic responsibility and good citizenship among residents of Cross River State.

The initiative, which has received the approval of Governor Bassey Edet Otu, was presented by Gill on Monday during an advocacy visit to the Commissioner for Environment, Barr. Bassey Offiong Mensah, at the Commissioner’s Office, Ministry of Environment headquarters, Calabar, where he sought the ministry’s collaboration in taking the campaign’s message to the public.

Gill said the campaign was conceived to positively reinforce values such as integrity, honesty, respect, accountability and community spirit, stressing that it was “not a political campaign” and, at its initial stage, “not a punitive measure.”

According to him, the message is simple: “Do the right thing anywhere you are; on the road, in the office, in the car, at school, in the market and at all times.” He added that the campaign would encourage citizens to challenge wrongdoing constructively and become ambassadors of positive change.

Gill said the initiative would “largely contribute to the implementation of environmental regulations and programmes in the state” by improving public awareness and voluntary compliance, particularly on proper waste disposal, keeping drainage channels clear and avoiding activities that degrade the environment.

He therefore called for collaboration with relevant government agencies to deploy billboards, flyers, branded T-shirts, caps and other communication materials in markets, major public spaces and other strategic locations, saying the campaign would help create the consciousness required for effective implementation of government programmes.

Gill, while commending the ministry’s environmental interventions, particularly the desilting of drainage channels, said the measures had helped ease flooding in some areas previously prone to inundation.

Responding, Mensah welcomed the initiative and expressed the ministry’s readiness to support it, describing the campaign as “highly philosophical” and relevant to the task of restoring environmental consciousness among residents.

“We know what is right, but we deliberately don’t want to do it,” Mensah said, stressing that sustained reminders could help citizens become more conscious of their responsibilities and improve compliance with environmentalp regulations.

The Environment Commissioner called for the message to be taken to the public through billboards, social media and flyers, particularly in markets, citing a recent sensitisation exercise at Bogobiri where community leaders and traders responded positively after being reminded of their environmental responsibilities.

He urged residents to complement government’s efforts by properly disposing of waste and keeping their surroundings and drainage channels clean, noting that indiscriminate dumping contributes to blocked waterways and flooding. “Government still has to give you security, light and good roads,” he said, urging citizens to also support government by doing their part.

He further advocated consequences for persistent violations after adequate sensitisation, stressing that citizens who deliberately disregard environmental regulations should be held accountable. “We owe them duties to educate them, enlighten them,” he said, adding that persistent violations should eventually attract consequences.

The advocacy visit was attended by the Special Adviser on Environment, Hon. Effiom Otu; Director, Open Space and Development, Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), Mr. Francis Cobham; and Director, Environmental Quality Control, Mr. Akpa Agbo.

Commissioner Lawrencia Ita Emerges Financial Secretary of Cross River Commissioners’ Forum

Hon. Mrs. Lawrencia E. Ita, Commissioner, Ministry of Establishments, Pensions and Training, has recorded another significant milestone in her public service career following her emergence as the Financial Secretary of the Cross River State Commissioners’ Forum.

Her election into the executive position is widely seen as a further recognition of her experience, dedication and commitment to the advancement of public service in Cross River State.

The new responsibility also underscores the confidence reposed in the Commissioner by her colleagues, who have entrusted her with a key role in the financial administration and affairs of the forum.

As Financial Secretary, Hon. Ita is expected to contribute her wealth of experience and administrative expertise towards strengthening the activities and programmes of the Commissioners’ Forum.

Reacting to the development, the management and staff of the Ministry of Establishments, Pensions and Training warmly congratulated the Commissioner on her well-deserved achievement.

C'R Govt Flag-off Persons with Disability Social Inclusion Survey with Two Days Training of Enumerators

As a way of demonstrating that the People's first agenda is not simply a slogan by the Governor but a vision of governance in which Government understands that the ultimate measure of development is the improvement in the lives of the people, the Cross River State Government has flagoff persons with disabilities survey to enable ascertain their unique demographic and inclusion for planning and development.

The Governor, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu represented by the vice chairman, Chief Executive Officer of the State Planning Commission Pastor Dr Bong Duke declared the two day event open at the conference hall of Cross River State Geographic Information Agency Calabar. The event brought stakeholders from the National Bureau of Statistics State office, National Population Commission, Persons with Disabilities Commission in partnership with the State Geographic Information Agency, Civil Society organization and relevant Ministries Departments and Agencies of Government.

In his address, the vice chairman admitted that persons with disabilities are an important part of the State population as they belong to families, communities and take part in economic activities as students, professionals, entrepreneurs, workers and parents. That the responsibility of the Government is not just to speak about inclusion but to understand the realities they face and use the understanding to make better decisions.

That part of the objectives of the survey exercise is for the Government to where the gaps exist, and understand what the barriers are which may hinder persons with disabilities from accessing healthcare, education, employment, social services and other opportunities. How they participate in their communities and most importantly what Government can do better to improve their lives.

According to Mr Duke, Government cannot plan effectively for what it doesn't have adequate information and the needs of a population cannot be understood if the evidence is missing. He appealed to the enumerators to treat every household with dignity, listen to them carefully and ask questions with respect while soliciting for the cooperation of communities as the State Government attached so much importance to the exercise.

Earlier, the State Statistician General,  Mrs Akedoh Okoi Edet asserted that the exercise is more than collecting figures, that it's about giving the Government better evidence to make better decisions as the information generated will help the Government and stakeholders identify gaps, plan appropriate Interventions, allocate resources more effectively and build a more inclusive Cross River State.

Mrs. Edet thanked the Governor His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu for his support to the Bureau, the Vice Chairman Chief Executive Officer of SPC, CR-GIA and relevant stakeholders including Association of Persons with disabilities and appealed to Cross Riverians to give Enumerators the needed support and cooperation as they visit identified households.

Cross River Civil Service Commission Opens Applications for Medical Officers Recruitment

The Cross River State Civil Service Commission has announced vacancies for qualified medical professionals to fill various positions in the State Civil Service.

The recruitment exercise follows the approval of the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for the employment of eligible Medical Officers into the State Civil Service.

In a job advertisement issued by the Commission, suitably qualified candidates between the ages of 18 and 45 years are invited to apply for the available positions. The vacancies cover five professional levels, namely Medical Officer, Senior Medical Officer II, Senior Medical Officer I, Principal Medical Officer (Consultant) II, and Principal Medical Officer I (Consultant). 

According to the advertisement, applicants for the position of Medical Officer are required to possess an MBBCH qualification with one to four years of practice. Candidates for Senior Medical Officer II are expected to have between five and nine years of practice, while those applying for Senior Medical Officer I are required to have between 10 and 15 years of practice. For the consultant positions, applicants are required to possess relevant postgraduate fellowship qualifications, with Principal Medical Officer (Consultant) II requiring one to four years of practice and Principal Medical Officer I (Consultant) requiring five years and above of practice.

The Commission stated that applications are to be submitted online, free of charge, through its dedicated recruitment portal. Applicants are required to upload their highest academic certificate, Certificate of Local Government Origin, Birth Certificate or Age Declaration, as well as NYSC Discharge, Exemption or Exclusion Certificate where applicable.

The Commission further emphasized that certificates submitted by applicants must be obtained from government-recognized institutions and uploaded from the originals.

The application portal is scheduled to open on Friday, September 18, 2026, and close on Friday, September 25, 2026.

The Commission also directed applicants to print a hard copy of their completed application forms after submission.

According to the advertisement, shortlisted candidates will be notified through email or WhatsApp and on the Commission's website between October 2 and October 5, 2026.

Successful shortlisted applicants will subsequently participate in an oral interview through physical appearance at the Commission's Conference Room in Calabar between October 5 and October 9, 2026.

The recruitment exercise is expected to provide an opportunity for qualified medical professionals to join the Cross River State Civil Service and contribute their expertise to the delivery of public services across the state.

Healthy Billionaires Seek NUJ Support for Unity, Sustainable Development Walkathon

The Healthy Billionaires, led by the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr Samuel Usoro, has solicited the support of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Cross River State Council, for its forthcoming Calabar Walkathon aimed at promoting unity and sustainable development.

Usoro made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the Healthy Billionaires to the NUJ Cross River State Council, where he disclosed that this year's walk would focus on breaking political, ethnic, religious and tribal barriers while encouraging citizens to unite and demand sustainable development from government and other stakeholders.

According to him, the walk is particularly significant as the country approaches another election cycle, a period often characterised by political divisions and competing interests.

He stressed that while citizens have the right to support and vote for candidates of their choice, such political differences should not destroy the unity of the society.

"People are allowed to choose who they want and vote for who they want. But the most important thing is to be united before and after the elections," he said.

Usoro explained that the Healthy Billionaires were using the annual walk as a platform to start conversations around issues affecting society and to encourage government, corporate organisations and citizens to pursue initiatives capable of producing lasting impact.

He said this year's theme, "A Walk for Unity and Sustainable Development", was designed to bring people together irrespective of political affiliation, tribe, religion or ethnicity.

"We are going to break all those barriers of division and then speak with one voice, asking people in authority, corporate leaders and even ourselves to do things that are sustainable for our economy and society," he said.

He appealed to journalists to amplify the message of the walk and help take the advocacy beyond Calabar, stressing that the media remained central to public advocacy and social mobilisation.

"We have come to the NUJ because we know we cannot do without you. The whole concept of advocacy comes from you guys. We are asking you to lend your voice and amplify what we want to do," Usoro said.

He disclosed that the walk would commence at 7am on Saturday from Millennium Park, with participants proceeding along the designated carnival route before returning for the wind up. He also hinted at the possibility of a post event press conference to highlight the outcomes and impact of the initiative.

Usoro said the Healthy Billionaires had, over the years, used its activities to draw attention to pressing social issues and stimulate conversations that could lead to government action.

He cited previous campaigns on drug abuse, mental health, autism and neurological disorders as examples of initiatives through which the organisation had brought government agencies, stakeholders and the media together to address societal challenges.

According to him, the organisation's advocacy on drug abuse helped draw attention to the absence of adequate rehabilitation facilities in the region, while its campaign on autism and neurological disorders also highlighted the need for specialised services such as speech therapy.

He explained that the organisation did not necessarily have the resources to directly solve every problem it identified but used its platforms to connect relevant stakeholders, generate public awareness and encourage those responsible to act.

"We start the conversation and bring the players into the same circle. We bring the media spotlight and the people saddled with the responsibility of making those things happen together. We start the discussions and hopefully it metamorphoses into a result," he said.

Usoro added that the group also monitored developments after its interventions and used available data to assess progress and determine areas requiring further action.

He said military and paramilitary formations had also been contacted ahead of this year's walk and were expected to participate and provide public enlightenment on issues relating to responsible citizenship, the consequences of destroying public property and other actions that could lead to criminal prosecution.

He further emphasised that the walk would be deliberately non partisan, with participants expected to set aside political differences and unite under the common objective of building a better society.

"We are opening our doors to everybody. You might see people from different political divides walking alongside one another. We are not talking politics that day. We are simply going to walk for unity and ask for sustainable development," she said.

Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ Cross River State Council, Comrade Archibong Bassey commended the Healthy Billionaires for consistently using its annual activities to draw attention to important issues affecting society.

The NUJ Chairman noted that sustainable development could not be achieved through government action alone, stressing the need for citizens to understand their responsibilities and contribute to building a better society.

She called for greater unity, trust and public reorientation, particularly at a time when social media continues to influence public discourse and shape perceptions.

She also raised questions about the need for follow up mechanisms to ensure that the conversations generated by the annual walks translate into measurable and sustainable outcomes.

During the interaction, attention was also drawn to concerns surrounding overcrowding in correctional facilities, the high number of awaiting trial inmates and the absence of adequate juvenile correctional facilities.

Victoria Omini, who participated in the discussion, shared observations from a recent visit to a correctional facility, where she said she was informed that the facility, originally built to accommodate about 450 inmates, was housing approximately 784 inmates.

She also raised concerns over the large number of awaiting trial inmates and the possibility of minors being held alongside adults due to the absence of appropriate juvenile facilities.

Omini said the situation deserved further attention and suggested that the issue of judicial delays and juvenile detention could become the focus of future advocacy efforts.

The Healthy Billionaires acknowledged the concerns, noting that sensitive issues involving correctional facilities would require careful consideration, stakeholder engagement and adequate preparation before being taken up publicly.

The group maintained that its annual walks were designed not merely as physical exercises but as platforms for advocacy, public enlightenment and the promotion of collective responsibility.

The 2026 Calabar Walkathon is expected to bring together citizens, government officials, corporate organisations, security agencies, civil society actors and other stakeholders in a symbolic demonstration of unity and a collective call for sustainable development.

Governor Bassey Otu Commend State Committee on Food and Nutrition for Topping Southern Nigeria States in Performance

The Governor, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu has commended the State Committee on Food and Nutrition for best performance in the whole of Southern part of Nigeria. That the activities and coordination efforts of the committee has made the State very proud at the national, while asserting that more support and funding will be to all line Ministries, Departments and Agencies for nutrition specific activities.

The Governor represented by the Vice Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, Cross River State Planning Commission, Pastor Dr. Bong Duke stated this when he declared open the 3rd quarter meeting of the committee held at the State Planning Commission building, New Secretariat Complex Calabar.

Mr Duke informed that, the President Federal Republic of Nigeria His Excellency Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR has invited the His Excellency the State Governor to join the vice President Federal Republic of Nigeria on high power delegation tour to Addis Abbaba in Ethiopia courtesy of activities of the State committee on Food and Nutrition which has showcase the State positively with massive human potentials and material resources to enhance coordination efforts.

He said, going forward all line MDAs shall experience improve level of funding of their activities to consolidate the State position and all the milestones that are red or yellow shall change to green because the State has the capacity to close all gaps, while emphasizing the need for the committee to do more and control in unity  and focused on the objectives of the committee.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Kingsley Ndem Eyibio thanked the Governor for providing the needed environment for the committee to perform their functions and the Vice Chairman Chief Executive Officer of SPC for steering the ship of the committee, extending to members of the State committee on Food and Nutrition for their understanding, unity and commitment to the work of the committee. He appealed that members should continue with the solidarity spirit for the growth and development of the State.

Adding her voice, the State Nutrition Officer, Mrs Nkem Eyoung Ubana, reminded members to send their report on time pointing out that every activity of nutrition is rated and has timelines for actions. That as a leading State, it's not good to present report at the national late. She used the occasion to express her appreciation to all stakeholders.

Highlights of the meeting were presentation and adoption of the 3rd report, presentation of progress reports on annual operational plans and proposed next steps.

Ukong Efut Omaleko and John Achot Okon join in Holy Matrimony

It was a moment of ecstasy and unlimited joy for parents, friends, colleagues and well wishers as the son of the former clerk of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Ntufam John Okon, Mr John Achot Okon Junior take the only daughter of Rev. Efot Joseph Omaleko retired to the altar for the  solemnization of their Holy Matrimony at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria old Town parish no 33 MCC road Calabar.

Delivering his sermon with the theme, love and submission, the pillars of successful marriage, the minister in charge, most Rev. Etok Nyong Okon admonished the couple to put the Word of God above their personal interests in all situations, that love and submission are the first order given by God to all those who choose to enter the first institution ordained for man, adding that no condition is attached, therefore, in all circumstances the man is to love the wife while the wife is to submit with humility to the husband as unto God.

Okon who shared his personal experience with the family of Rev Efot Joseph Omaleko described the father of the bright as a disciplinarian who took time to bring up his children in the fear of the Lord and draw the Bible reading from the book of Ephesians five verses 24 to 33, adding that the groom is a serious Christian with the fear of God. That the couple should always seek God's position because God who instituted it has the answers to every situation.

On his part, the chairman of the occasion, RT Hon. Dr. Emil Inyang, current member representing the people of Akamkpa Biase Federal constituency encouraged youths to emulate the couple's style of marriage celebration, asserting that the marriage was simple, straightforward without unnecessary items or delays which demonstrate the respect the couple have for invited guests.

Hon. Inyang commended the couple and congratulated them for choosing a simple format of celebrating their marriage despite the social standing of their parents who are very successful in their respective careers with intimidating profiles with each reaching the peak of their endeavours.

Adding his voice, the chairman, Cross River State House of Assembly Service Commission Honourable Ntufam Victor Okon congratulated the couple for the bold steps taken to distinguish themselves, that the decision to get married is a demonstration of maturity of the mind as marriage is not for feeble minds.

Ntufam Victor expressed the belief that given the solid background of the couple parents which coincidentally clocked 50 years each in peaceful and blessed marriage life, the new couple is blessed with such rich heritage to emulate, while asserting that the galaxy of very important personalities who honour the event is a reflection of the parents credibility and standing in the society.

The marriage was conducted according to the tradition and practice of the Presbyterian Church, while the reception was held at the doom, Calabar Municipal Council with a sea of dignitaries from the church, both families, the political class, House of Assembly staff, members of the Brotherhood of the Cross River State, friends and well wishers.

Today, Hon. Abednego Okon empowered Five (5) Cross Riverians with brand new POS Machines loaded with Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000) each as start-up capital to begin their own businesses.

This is not just empowerment, this is giving people a means of livelihood, a source of daily income, and a path to financial independence.

Chairman Civil Service Commission Commend Group for Their Sense of Gratitude

The Chairman, Cross River State Civil Service Commission, Sir. Maurice Effiwatt ksji has commended Progressive Vanguard, a group of Civil Servants Recruited by Governor Bassey Otu from 2024-2025 for mobilizing themselves to Support  the Governor's Reelection in 2027 and for cultivating the spirit of thanksgiving by recognizing what the Governor has done for them. 

He disclosed this during a courtesy visit to him at his office, State Civil Service Commission building New Secretariat Complex Calabar where he informed that the Governor has established it clearly that master Jesus Christ is the boss of the State and he has demonstrated it by reaching out to those that feel abandoned, neglected or rejected.

According to the chairman, all the casual Staff in Cross River Broadcasting Corporation, State Internal Revenue Service, and many Ministries Departments and Agencies where some have worked for over 16 years as casual Staff were all ratified and absorbed into the Civil Service courtesy of the Governor benevolence.

He promised to take their message to the Governor and pledge his support when necessary. He advised them to take their duties schedules seriously, adding that it takes one man to change the cause of history and that is what the Governor has done in their lives.

The progressive Vanguard body led by its Director General Sir. Edwin Orok-Edet Duke ksji asserted that it was a historic reality that the dream of being a Civil Servant which many of had buried was resurrected by His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu visionary leadership. That not less than 3500 Civil servants recruited by the Government between 2024 to 2025 have put themselves into a body known as Progressive Vanguard to support the reelection of Governor Bassey Edet Otu come 2027 and more have indicated interest to join the group. 

Mr Edwin said the Progressive Vanguard is a nonpartisan assembly of Civil Servants who were successfully recruited in the State Civil Service from 2024 to date and has expanded its members to other senior Civil servants that are willing to support the reelection of the Governor, adding that the structure of the ground is present in the 18 LGAs and the three Senatorial Districts of the State.

According to Mr Edwin, the objective of the body is to give back to the Governor  their votes as an appreciation for his people's oriented governance believing that the reelection of the Governor will not only consolidate the developmental gains already made but will also open doors for more Cross Riverians to be employed into both the State and Local Government services.

He used the occasion to express the group appreciation to the chairman of the commission Sir Maurice Effiwatt for his fatherly role during the recruitment exercise and his selfless service.

In attendance were members of the State executive, Senatorial coordinators and featured prayer and introduction of members and portfolios.

Anyogo Mobilizes Community for Governor Bassey Otu Reelection Bid

 A prominent Nigerian Lawyer from Yala LGA Sir, Leonard Anyogo has carried out sensitization and mobilization in support of the reelection of Governor Bassey Otu in his community to educate the people on the good governance the State currently enjoy including plans and performance of His Excellency the Governor while reiterating what the community stands to benefits with the return of Governor Bassey Otu to Government House in 2027. 

Sir Anyogo who is the Director General, Good Governance Advocacy International addressed his people at Alifokpa community and informed that the sensitization is commencing from the community as a take off base with continuation to other communities and all wards in Yala. That the policies of the Governor has both short and long term benefits for Cross Riverians,  therefore the community shall benefit more with Governor Bassey Otu than anyone that may promise what they can not deliver just to deceived the electorate.

According to Anyogo, the good performance of the Governor is impirical, evidence based and devoid of guesswork which recently led to the Governor's Epitome of Good Governance Award bestored on him at Channel View hotel Calabar courtesy of visible progress and development the state has enjoyed citing the revolution in the Agricultural sector and the peace witness across the State. Stating that Good Governance Advocacy International promotes good governance, community participation in governance, training of officials and government and corporate entities. 

He advised the community to understand that development is a process and requires planning, budgeting before executing, adding that the Governor have not forgotten about the community development needs which includes the Akreha bridge and the Alifokpa community road.

He caution the youths not to take to drugs as there is no future for whoever that is into drugs and it will be better for them to live healthy and mentally sound to witness and enjoy the positive development that are coming to the community courtesy of His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu who's sweetness is for all Cross Riverians.

Responding, the youth leader Comr. Ife Dickson appealed to Sir Anyogo to remind the Governor of the need to speed up the social infrastructural development of the community to reduce their suffering, while the women leader Mrs. Janet Agu also alluded to the position of the youth leader, adding that Sir Leonard is their trusted leader who understands the matrix of Government while assuring that the election of Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu for second term is their priority.

In a related development, Sir Anyogo who is a stalwart of the APC and commissioner one in the CRS House of Assembly Service Commission took the Good Governance Advocacy International message to stakeholders and also held a very rewarding meeting with the Catholic priest in Matter Ecclesiae Parish, Rev. Fr. Raphael Moses in Alifokpa yache Yala LGA where the priest accepted to join the fight against drugs abuse to promote better society which will enhance peace election and grassroot development.

Chairman House of Assembly Service Commission Inspect Newly Allocated Offices at the Nigerian Chronicle Complex

The chairman Cross River State House of Assembly Service Commission, Ntufam Hon. Victor Okon has carried out an inspection visit to the new allocated offices at the Nigerian Chronicle Complex, Barracks road Calabar. 

The chairman and his team was received on arrival by the general manager of the corporation Mrs Kewu Edet who expressed the belief that the present Commission headed by Ntufam Okon has the capacity to make a great difference, adding that the visit is an indication that the commission will soon put the place to effective use, that she is happy to host the commission.

On his part, the commission chairman, Hon. Okon informed that the visit was to assess what is required to fix the office and make it ready for Staff to move in and perform their duties.

He thanked the Governor His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet for approving the office space for the commission, adding that when the office is fully partitioned and furnished it would enhance Staff performance. He thanked the general manager, Nigerian Chronicle for accepting the commission without reservations.

Adding his voice, the commissioner one, and head of administration in the commission Hon. Leonard Anyogo Esq, expressed satisfaction with the location of the office, stating that adjustments can be made with ease without distractions to the master plan and it will provide a comfortable ambience for staff.

Highlights of the visit was a tour around the office space. Others in the chairman team were Hon. Charles kutman, Chief Admin officer, Mr. Owai Omini and the information officer Dr. Iloke Egbe.

2027: C’River Elders Endorse Otu, as Gov Announces Gratuity Payment

The Cross River State Elders’ Forum has overwhelmingly endorsed Governor Bassey Edet Otu for a second term in office, declaring that his administration’s strides in governance, security, healthcare, infrastructure and economic development have earned him the confidence and support of the state’s elder statesmen.

The endorsement was contained in an address presented by the Chairman of the Forum, retired Colonel Pam Ogar, former Military Administrator of Kwara State, when the elders paid a courtesy visit to Governor Otu at the State Executive Council Chamber, Calabar, on Thursday.

Ogar said the Forum had carefully observed the administration’s performance and was convinced that Otu deserved another term to consolidate the gains already recorded and complete ongoing programmes. “The Forum hereby expresses its confidence in your administration and accordingly, wholeheartedly encourages you to present yourself for a second term in office,” he declared. “This will enable you consolidate the gains already recorded, complete the numerous developmental programmes initiated under your administration and complete the uncompleted programmes initiated by your predecessor in office.”

The elders said their endorsement was anchored on what they described as the Governor’s demonstrated commitment to building “a prosperous, inclusive and united Cross River State” through collective responsibility, mutual trust and sustained citizens’ participation. They particularly commended his People First philosophy, noting that the administration had shown an uncommon willingness to listen to citizens, respond to their concerns and improve governance through continuous engagement. According to Ogar, the establishment of the Cross River State Public Complaints Office, the Cross River State Live platform and the Governor’s consistent audience with the Elders’ Forum were “eloquent testaments” to the administration’s readiness to listen to the people.

The Forum also applauded the administration’s interventions in the health sector, particularly the upgrading of schools of nursing to Colleges of Nursing in Obudu, Ogoja, Itigidi and Calabar. The development, the elders noted, had expanded opportunities for professional nursing education, including National Diploma and Higher National Diploma qualifications, while enabling graduates to participate in the National Youth Service Corps scheme. On security, they commended Governor Otu’s efforts in curbing robbery and kidnapping, but urged a more proactive security architecture to address the activities of cattle grazers, alleged illegal settlements and iron scavengers in parts of the state. They specifically expressed concern over reported activities in Obanliku, Obudu, Ogoja, Ikom and Obubra.

Agriculture also featured prominently in the Forum’s assessment, with the elders commending the administration’s increased budgetary attention to the sector and efforts to raise improved oil-palm seedlings for distribution to farmers. They argued that sustained investment in agriculture would strengthen production, create employment and expand the state’s economic base. However, the Forum appealed to the Governor to intensify efforts towards the payment of outstanding gratuities and harmonised pensions owed retired civil and public servants, stressing that many retirees continued to endure severe economic hardship. “It is our passionate appeal that government take a serious look into this problem to ameliorate the sufferings of retirees,” Ogar said.

The elders also congratulated Governor Otu as Vice Chairman, of the South-South Governors’ Forum and commended his role in the successful hosting of the Forum’s meeting in Cross River State, with the Pan Niger Delta Forum and BRACED Commission in attendance. Ogar described the gathering as one of the region’s successful meetings, citing the conviviality among the governors, the concrete decisions reached and the renewed commitment to regional development. He urged the Governor, if given a second term, to place industrialisation and the development of a productive economy at the centre of his agenda. “Cross River must move beyond consumption to production, value addition, job creation and sustainable economic growth,” he said.

Responding, Governor Otu expressed profound appreciation to the elders for their visit, counsel and endorsement, describing their experience and wisdom as invaluable assets in the task of state-building. He said sitting before the elders came with “a very heavy burden” because he saw in them men and women who had sacrificed enormously to sustain Cross River and lay the foundations upon which the present generation was building. “When I look at the faces here, I see people who have reached the peak in their different professions and who have had experiences which we still need in terms of nation-building and state-building,” Otu said. He added that the state was privileged to have such a reservoir of experience and wisdom available to guide its present leadership.

The Governor said the relationship between his administration and the elders was one of constructive partnership, stressing that the wisdom of the older generation remained an indispensable compass even in an era of changing social dynamics and generational expectations. He thanked the Forum for its support, prayers and constructive counsel, assuring the elders that their interventions would continue to inform the administration’s policies and decisions. On the issue of retirees’ outstanding benefits, Otu disclosed that government had commenced arrangements for the release of the next tranche of gratuity to retired civil servants before December, assuring the elders that the administration remained sensitive to the plight of retirees and committed to progressively addressing the backlog.

Governor Otu further used the occasion to speak on the state’s renewed efforts to secure its economic interests, particularly the campaign for recognition of Cross River’s oil-producing assets and the recovery of its oil wells. Reflecting on the painstaking process behind the state’s advocacy, he said his administration would not relent in protecting the resources belonging to present and future generations. “These things were created by God and the universe. As a people, if there is something that we owe the next generation, it is to hand over what God has given to us,” he said. “We take care of it and then hand it over to the next generation.” He assured the elders that their support and experience would remain critical to the administration’s determination to build a stronger, more prosperous and united Cross River. 

Former Deputy Governor of the state, Prof. Ivara Esu, was among dignitaries in attendance at the meeting.

UNICROSS Is Rising

Friday 4th September 2026 will remain a significant day in the history of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS). For the first time, the University hosted the First Lady of Nigeria, the Governor and First Lady of Cross River State, alongside many of the state’s leading political and public figures. Their presence was more than ceremonial; it was a strong statement about the place of UNICROSS in the state’s future.

The occasion was not a seminar, symposium or political gathering. The First Lady , Sen. Remi Tinubu, Governor Bassey Otu, his dear wife, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey and other dignitaries were in UNICROSS to commission a state-of-the-art ICT Centre delivered under the administration of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey. A university’s transformation is best measured not by speeches, but by the quality of infrastructure, opportunities and learning environment it creates for its students and staff.

For an institution that endured a period of limited attention from government, the renewed focus on UNICROSS is encouraging. Bringing government officials to the University allows them to see its realities firsthand, the needs, the gaps and the possibilities. It creates a stronger basis for intervention because policymakers are no longer relying solely on reports; they can see the institution and understand where support is most needed.

Those of us who care deeply about UNICROSS have always known that Governor Otu considers the University important. What has become clearer is the scale of that interest. From facilitating the administration block as a Senator to approving projects covering roads, a mini-stadium and the proposed Medical College, the administration has continued to demonstrate that UNICROSS belongs on the development agenda of Cross River.

The Governor’s interventions extend beyond physical infrastructure. At a time when many states were struggling with rising wage obligations, his administration implemented the minimum wage for University staff. He also constituted a committee to examine the broader challenges confronting the institution and recommend a more comprehensive approach. These steps suggest an understanding that a university cannot thrive on buildings alone; its people and systems must also work.

Credit must also go to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bassey under whose leadership, all this good things are happening. The ICT Centre is a monumental achievement, but it also represents what can happen when institutional leadership is willing to work relentlessly within difficult circumstances. I’ve watched the Vice Chancellor go days without sleeping just so UNICROSS can work. Certain things she has done can only be done by someone with extraordinary grace. This ICT centre is one of the many deliverables the university has witnessed under her watch. Soon, the Governor will be invited for another round of commissioning across campuses.

The Governing Council, led by Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, equally deserves commendation for providing strategic support and oversight to the Vice Chancellor and her Management. 

So, thank you, First Lady Remi Tinubu, thank you Governor Otu, and thank you, First Lady Bishop Otu, for honouring UNICROSS with your presence. Thank you, Prof. Bassey, for giving the University reasons to believe again. And thank you to the 6th Governing Council and the entire Management team. With purposeful leadership, strategic support and sustained government attention, UNICROSS can rise to the institution Cross River deserves.

Your Job will Help Govt. Identify Funding Gaps and Address it to Advance Even Development in the State - Hon. Victor Okon

The chairman Cross River State House of Assembly Service Commission Hon. Ntufam Victor Okon has advised auditors in the State Civil Service to continue to uphold the ethics of their profession as it would help the Government to identify Funding Gaps and Address it using the budget instrument.

The chairman gave the advice when he received a team of auditors in his office at the House of Assembly Service Commission Complex who were on routine official duties to assess the financial situation and compliance of the commission to the financial regulations as required in the public sector.

Addressing the team of auditors, Ntufam Okon said I am happy you are here to see things for yourself, this will enable you to advise the Government well on financial issues as your visit serves as our witness to the paucity of funds the commission is facing. Adding that there is no inflow as expected to position the commission in comparison with its other Commissions.

He asserted that the Commission has viable plans and experience commissioners, that with proper funding the Commission will be enviably positioned, and expressed the belief that the Governor, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu has not forgotten about the commission.

According to Ntufam Okon, the Governor is a progressive minded man, that he will surprise the commission with adequate funding and things that may appear as challenges now shall not have a place in the nearest future, that this time demands that we show deep understanding with Government as dwindling funds is not peculiar with Cross River State.

He advised Staff to put the Governor and the State in their prayers, citing the efforts of the Governor to return the State to oil producing Status which has yielded positive results and shall transform the State positively beyond our expectations, and the joy will vanish the pains of today.

Earlier, the team leader, Ms Victoria Bassey Etim, informed the chairman that they were on a routine official duties as required in the Civil service to avoid poor financial performance and reporting by any Government establishment as it will affect the credibility and ratings of the administration. She said the objectives of the visit were to ensure that accountability of public funds is not compromised by officials of the Government. 

According to Ms. Etim, the visit was to ensure that financial records are kept in a transparent manner to avoid diversion of funds, and retirements of funds are also done timely. She expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Director of account, stating that Mr. David Ajoronor is an experienced and seasoned accountant who is very versatile in his Job. 

Highlights of the visit were inspection of the commission financial records and interactive session. Other auditors in attendance were Mr. Essien Nyong, Head of Department and supervisor, Mrs. Ekpoanwan Ekpenyong Nsa, Mrs . Mary Peter Imong, Mr Joseph Ekpenyong Okon and Miss Esther Akiba Ekpenyong as members.
